What is Lavender?
Lavender is an evergreen perennial shrub. Its purple flowers, which bloom in late spring, last until early autumn. Although it is a native species of the Mediterranean, it is also cultivated in Europe and Western America. The use of lavender dates back thousands of years. Its first written record in history was found in Egypt, in connection with mummification processes. Widely used in Greek and Roman cultures, lavender was especially featured in baths, foods, perfumes, wound healing, and insect repellent mixtures. The use that gave lavender its name, derived from the Latin word "lavaren" (to wash), was the Roman practice of using it as a post-bath perfume. Like other plants, it can be brewed as a tea, essential oil, or tincture. An indispensable part of French cuisine, lavender is used in sauces, bread, desserts, and meat preparations for its sweet and floral aroma.
